For this essay, please examine how two critical concepts – globalization of our world and the nature of the employment relationship – are intertwined together in the context of a third issue. • Your view. Please discuss what you view globalization as referring to, and what is happening with globalization today. (Do not use textbook definitions – use your own definition of globalization, i.e. whatever you think the concept means when you hear the word “globalization.”) Explain! (10 points) • Also your view. Please discuss how you view the nature of the employment relationship – is it primarily economic, is it a relationship like a family, is it like an apprenticeship, is it an equal partnership, is it more like an arranged marriage? Is it more like some other type of relationship? Why do you see it this way? Explain! (10 points) • Explain your view on a third issue you select. (10 points) • Tie your views to a third issue you select. Please intertwine the three issues in terms of how they affect or are affected by each other in our society today. (20 points) These four tasks do not need to be done in that order! For example, if you wanted to examine the issue of outsourcing, you could talk about what is going on with outsourcing in business today, how that affects/is affected by globalization, and what that does to our views of the nature of the employment relationship. For another example, if you wanted to look closely at the issue of illegal immigration, you could talk about what is going on with globalization now, how that is related to illegal immigration now, and then what globalization and illegal immigration together do to our views of the nature of the employment relationship today. There really is no concept that you couldn’t incorporate as your third issue – it could be an employment issue (declining union representation), socioeconomic trend (increasing use of the internet of things), a public health issue (rising addiction rates), an environmental issue (global warming), an ethical issue (human rights), or something you particularly are interested in (intellectual property, the democratic process, stress, species extinction, rising wealth inequality, technology, work/life balance, mindfulness, social media, capitalism, mentoring, organic food, ok you get the picture.) You don’t have to do this in any formal order, either. A lot will depend on the story you want to tell. By the end of your essay, you’ll have discussed your view on the two concepts (globalization and the nature of the employment relationship) and tied in a third issue to them both in some way. This is a very opinion-based analysis. Sources are welcome but not required. Have some fun with this and let your creativity out if you choose this question.
