Students are required to submit a ten-page research paper as part of this course. The topics will be chosen by students, subject to approval by the instructor. This assignment is broken into multiple parts over the course of the semester. The stages are described below and the schedule is included at the end of the syllabus
First Stage: Topic Selection- Students will choose a topic subject to approval of the instructor. Topics must be relevant to the course. As part of this assignment, students will submit a one-paragraph description of their topics. Failure to complete this stage of the assignment will result in a one-letter grade reduction in the final paper grade.
Second Stage: Preliminary Bibliography- For the second stage of this assignment, students will submit a preliminary bibliography for their paper. At least six sources should be included in this submission. The purpose of this stage if for the instructor to help direct students to sources they should be using and away from sources they should not. Failure to complete this stage of the assignment will result in a one-letter grade reduction in the final paper grade.
Third Stage: Rough Draft- For this stage, students will submit a complete rough draft for evaluation by the instructor. The instructor will evaluate and comment on this paper and place a grade on it as if it were the final draft, but this grade if for your information only. The purpose is to help students see how to improve the paper for final submission. Failure to complete this stage of the assignment will result in a one-letter grade reduction in the final paper grade. An incomplete draft will not be accepted.
Final Stage: Final Draft- For the last stage, students will submit a final draft for evaluation. This submission will be graded and any penalties from the previous three stages applied.
Technical Paper RequirementsFormat: Page margins will be the standard (1.25” left and right, 1” top and bottom). The font will be 12-point Times New Roman, and the paper shall be double-spaced. Page numbers are required on the top left of the paper. There should be no gaps between paragraphs. Block quotes should be single space and indented on both sides. They should also be used sparingly in a papers of this length. The first and second person should not be used in an academic paper. All basic grammar rules of formal, written English are in effect for this paper, whether or not they are listed here. A title page is also required, and does not count towards the page totals.
Citation: Citations shall be by footnote or endnote only. Parenthetical citation is not used by the historical profession, and will not be used in this class. For proper footnote/endnote citation consult Kate Turabian’s Manual of Style. The default 10-point Times New Roman font is required for footnotes. An endnote page does not count toward the page total.
Sources: Encyclopedias should never be used in academic work, use of the Wikipedia will result in an automatic F. Videos are also not appropriate sources for academic work, with very rare exceptions. Internet sources not on the schools’s list of online databases are not permitted. Journal articles from databases, such as JSTOR, should be treated as journal articles and not as internet sources for citation purposes. Books and journal articles should provide the lion’s share of your secondary sources. Books assigned for the class are off limits. Course notes, for this or any other class, are not acceptable paper sources.
