1. For this assignment, we’ll build upon this week’s investigation into citation styles alternative to MLA by locating a scholarly article from your major discipline (or a chosen discipline, if you’re unsure of your major) and describing its defining characteristics.

To Begin: Locate a scholarly article (using the Wake Tech Library databases, or an appropriately scholarly source from a web search) about any issue associated with your chosen major. When you’ve found the article, read it through carefully, and make sure that you’ve found an article that interests you intellectually and is a piece that you can easily comprehend and discuss. Some of you in more challenging fields like engineering or medicine may find that the material is dry–try not to chose an article that you struggle to come to terms with. It’s better to keep searching until you find something that piques your interest.
This response will be a close analysis of the article from your major field. In your paper, offer a detailed analysis of these different aspects; you will write in basic essay format but use MLA style in-text citations and a Works Cited page.

  1. Find information about the author(s), about the context of the article or book chapter, and, if possible, the place of the author in the field. Explain how this article fits into the work of the field. Analyze the importance of the article, explaining why it was written and how it’s important to the conversation of the field.
  2. What is the writer’s main argument and how is it developed? This is a good place to use your developed summary skill.

III. Examine the relationship between the author and the audience. Explain how the writer establishes credibility by citing his or her credentials, using examples, etc. If you have other information about the writer’s work, include it here and cite it. What is the writer’s attitude toward the subject and the audience? Explain your claims with analysis.

      • Audience: who is the audience the writer is addressing and how do you know? What does this audience already know and what does it need to know? Use the text to explain your conclusions.
      • Subject: what is the subject of the piece and how is it delineated? What can you tell about the writer and the audience from the choice and limitations of the subject?
  1. Analyze the appeals of the writer’s argument or presentation of the subject. Be specific about using the text to support your analysis. What kind of argument does the writer make primarily?
      • Credibility: Character/ background of speaker: Is this person credible? Trustworthy? What is the person’s bias? What do you know about him/ her that would influence your interpretation?
      • Emotion: What emotions are appealed to? How? Is this effective? For whom?
      • Logic: What logic, reasons, facts, statistics are presented? What evidence is used to convince the audience?
  1. How effective is this article for you as the audience and a beginning scholar in the field, and what does it tell you about writing in your field?

Assignment length: at least 2 double-spaced pages. It is okay to exceed this length requirement, but please email me if you find yourself writing more than 3 pages in response.
