ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION (see syllabus for complete description) Students are required to write a 2000 word paper, with relevant findings from the peer reviewed literature, using APA format comparing and contrasting the US and a chosen country. Students will need to incorporate the major concepts learned in class related to the comparative method for cross-cultural understanding and should include a research paper with the subtitles/sections listed below. 1. Description of the group. Provide general population characteristics (e.g., age pyramid), health status, and a brief overview of the country’s culture including official languages spoken. 2. Leading morbidity and mortality indicators. Description and analysis of at least four major health issues of the selected population (morbidity, mortality, health statistics, analysis of health issues from a local and global perspective). This discussion needs to focus on the topic that was approved for them at the beginning of the semester. Say for instance the approved topic was maternal health. The leading morbidity and mortality indicators could include: a. Access to pre-natal health services b. Maternal mortality c. Infant mortality d. Health insurance coverage 3. Analysis. Be sure to discuss two to three specific steps that could be used to improve those services in each of the locations. 4. Implications for Multicultural and Global Health. Description and analysis of the student’s ideas validated by her/his scientific research on how culture affects the health of the selected population and what recommendations are given to improve the health of the selected population. ? PLAGIARISM Class participants will submit their research papers to a plagiarism detection site. Originality reports should be at least 90% for the research papers. You may indicate in writing to the instructor if you want to opt out to participate in the plagiarism identification process, in which case your instructor will use other means to verify the originality of your work. This written notification should be given to the instructor at the time you submit your research paper and should include the reasons for your refusal. Students who plagiarize in this assignment will be subject to the University’s Academic Integrity Policy (APM 235, 236, 241) and will automatically receive an “F” in the class.
Be sure to follow APA format in the development of the abstract. I recommend you write this last. Introduction • Capture your audience’s attention with a provocative statement, a quote, an anecdote, and/or statistics. “As populations grow worldwide, the need for improved health care is necessary to ensure the health and safety of humanity. Culturally diverse nations form opposing health care policies with the same objective: adequate care for their people. As seen with Finland and United States policies, many improvements can be made to increase the overall health of the nation. In order to improve healthcare and surrounding populations, analysis of the current residents and healthcare system must be made. Once underlying causes are identified, those problems can be confronted and healthcare can be improved worldwide. “ • Build up to your case or the main reason for your paper. “It is estimated that 15% of children born in the developing world die before the age of one (WHO, 2010).” • Summarize the main idea of your paper. Be sure to state this is a comparison paper containing information about TOPIC X and comparing the US and COUNTRY Z. “This paper examines four major disparities among reproductive health services specifically in the Republic of Kenya and compares and contrasts them to the US.” Description of the Group It is likely your audience is not familiar with your group therefore you should provide a description for your population. While the information contained for the US and your country of comparison need not be as comprehensive as the one in the profile you created for Learning Unit 3, it should contain a comprehensive description of demographic factors which affect the populations you are writing about. “Fresno County has a population of 930,450 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. Brazil’s 2010 census recorded the population at 190,732,694. Fresno County has a 50% female population while Brazil has 51% of its population as females. In Fresno County the age distribution is as follows; 8.5% are under 5, 21.3% are age 5-17, 60.2% are age 18-64, and 10% are 65+ years old. While Brazil’s age distribution shows 26.2% are under 14, 67% are age 15-65, and 6.7% are 65+ years old. In Fresno County the official language is English [INSTRUCTOR NOTE: THERE IS NO OFFICIAL LANGUATE IN FRESNO COUNTY] while the official language of Brazil is Portuguese, however, in Fresno County 42.6% of the population speak a language other than English at home. Morbidity and Mortality Indicators Each of the topics approved for this class is extremely complex and much has been written about it. To simplify these complex issues, I am asking you to select four (4) morbidity and mortality indicators to compare your country and the US. “Though reproductive and sexual health encompasses many aspects of health, the specific issues discussed include HIV, female genital mutilation, adolescent education, and physical screenings. “ “The major health issues in India are very similar to those in the United States in areas that have an increasing standard of living. Health Issues India (2012) says that the number one killer in India is now cardiovascular disease. This is a major shift in the health status of the Indian subcontinent when not long ago the major killers of people were communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis, malaria and measles. The majority of the people in the country (especially those in rural areas and slums) live with poor sanitation, poor access to clean drinking water and low nutrition status.” Analysis This section provides an opportunity to conduct a clinical analysis of the morbidity and mortality indicators discussed in the previous section with a specific number of recommendations. “Cardiovascular disease encompasses a wide range of medical complications but mostly is attributed to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and hypertension (high blood pressure). Cardiovascular is disease is the most common killer worldwide. Education may be the most common approach to combating coronary artery disease, but it’s the implementation of the education that is important. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, eating a healthy diet, regularly checking your BMI, and regular exercise help decrease risks for cardiovascular death (“Prevention: What you,” 2009).
[INSTRUCTOR NOTE: THE REFERENCE IS NOT IN APA FORMAT].
Implications for Multicultural/Global Health This is your opportunity to express what you have learned in the class and in the research you did. “The United States spends on average ,960 per capita a year on health care. Germany spends 11.6 percent of its country’s GDP or an of 4,218 per capita (Sauter, 2010). Germany isn’t a perfect country, like all countries there are diseases and health problems that happen there. The difference between the United States and Germany is that Germany’s government pays for the medical expenses, unless an individual decides to pay outside help.” Conclusion While not specifically requested in the syllabus, it is a good idea to include. Restate your main points Summarize the ideas you’ve presented Return to your introduction or conclude with a compelling remark References Your paper should provide evidence that at least ten scientific sources published in the last five years were consulted. For purposes of this assignment a scientific source is defined as either an article appearing in a peer-reviewed journal or an authoritative report published by a respected body (e.g., the World Health Organization). In many cases these materials will only be found online, but you are encouraged to consult printed media when available. Under no circumstances is Wikepedia an acceptable source of information.
