Grading Rubric and Critical Elements for a Class Discussion

Grading Rubric /0.5 Introduce your discussion with a single paragraph. The paragraph should end with a single-sentence thesis statement summarizing the purpose of the discussion.

/3 Describe how barriers to APRN practice affect (a) healthcare financing/costs, (b) access, (c) delivery, and (d) quality. Support your conclusions with evidence and examples.

/2 Discuss how the implementation of the APRN Consensus Model stands to impact your role as an APRN. This could be positive and/or negative. Consider the following: How has the Consensus Model created or removed barriers to the APRN role? How has the Consensus Model affected certification in your specialty area?

/3 Discuss the status of implementation of the APRN Consensus Model in your home state.

Discussion should include the following:

What titles are used for APRNs?

Are all four APRN roles recognized in your state? If not, which roles are not recognized?

Is the term “licensure” used for APRN roles in your state? If not, what term(s) are used?

Is a graduate or post graduate degree required in your state to practice in an advanced practice role?

Is national certification required in your state to practice in an advanced practice role?

Do APRN roles allow for independent practice in your state? Not independent? No authority?

Do the APRN roles allow for independent prescribing in your state? Not independent? No authority?

/3 Identify and discuss legislation in your state legislature regarding the APN role.

Is there legislation currently being proposed in your state legislature regarding the APN role? Identify potential outcomes (may be patient based, system based, or policy based) that would support that the proposed change in state law was beneficial or successful. Has there been previous state legislation that has failed?

How does this failure stand to impact your practice? To find out, go to the state legislature websites and search for current state legislation. Use search terms such as “nurse”, “nursing”, “APRN,” etc. /0.5 Conclusion: Provide a single summary paragraph of the main points of the discussion. /1.5 Substantial cross posts to at least two (2) other students.

The cross posts provide new or supplemental information to the original posting or raise additional areas for discussion. New or additional peer-reviewed references should be cited in both cross posts. /1.5 Students demonstrate active engagement in the discussion by responding to cross posts from their peers to their initial posting.

References are not required for these responses. The key to this section is to demonstrate active engagement in the discussion through your interaction with your peers–watch for posts from your classmates and acknowledge their posting.

*Note: if the student does not have peer cross posts for the initial posting, these points will be incorporated into the cross post section above. /15 Total Points Overall points are awarded based on the quality of the posts and the degree to which the submissions contribute to the class discussion. Students must show evidence of engagement throughout the discussion and postings should reflect application of the assigned lesson materials.
