Bringing Dick\’s Sporting Goods into Mexico
Description: Final Project Requirements For your final project, you selected DICKS SPORTING GOODS, a well known company and conduct a comprehensive analysis of a country where the company is not yet present. After extensive research, you will make recommendations about whether or not it makes sense to expand internationally. Your presentation consists of both power point and a written report. The following sections must be included in both you written and power point slide show 1. Background of the company and of the country
2. Cultural influences on business 3. Economic and legal influences on business 4. Political and government influences on trade/business 5. Involvement in international organizations 6. Importing/exporting strategies 7. Recommendations: Do you recommend expanding into this country? What would be the most effective plan of action for your corporation to expand? Note: (1) See Student Aids for how to create a Written Busines Plan template in a Microsoft Word or Small Business Administration (SBA) format.
Note: (2) A great deal of learning and work went into your Weekly Journals, discussion Boards and Essays. Therefore, you may wish to complement your Narrated Presentation and your Written Business Plan that is due in week 7 with much of that value added information.
Note: (3) When completing one of the Business Plan templates that is provided in the Student Aids, while answering as many of the template questions as you can: insert, bold and number the seven mandatory questions listed above. Doing so will enable me to easily see that you addressed the required questions. Each week you research a topic specific to the presentation and present your findings in a journal format.
At the end of week 6, you can compile all of your information into the final product. Below is a more detailed description of what is required each week. • Week One: Select both a country and a U.S. company that you want to investigate thoroughly. The company/product cannot already be present in the country. Remember that you are going to conduct a comprehensive analysis and present an action plan on how to introduce your product.
Therefore, it is important that your selections have plenty of information available. This week identify the country and company that you are interested in researching. Explain why you are interested in them and how you plan to go about your research (articles, websites, personal information). Make sure to select your country early as no country can be repeated.
Selection is on a first come, first serve basis. • Week Two: Describe your country\’s legal (common, civil, theocratic, customary, mixed laws), religious, cultural (social stratification), and political atmosphere. What implications does each have on international business? Be as specific as possible. • Week Three: Measure the economic development, performance, and potential for your country. Include the following data: narrow features (GNI, GDP, GNP), broad features (HDI, HPI, NPP), and leading indicators (inflation, unemployment, debt, income distribution, poverty, and balance of payment).
What do the data suggest about your country\’s performance and potential? What impact does each have on international business? Provide data for at least 5 years. Make sure to include proper APA references. • Week Four: Identify and describe your country\’s approach to economic integration (bilateral, regional and global integration – all that apply). Who are your country\’s strongest allies? What are some of the major agreements that have had the most impact – whether positive or negative – on international business? What is a significant issue the country presently faces?
• Week Five: Assess your company’s industry structure. Use the five-forces model (see article in your Readings/Resources folder) to highlight the relationships among suppliers of inputs, buyers of outputs, substitute products, potential new entrants and rivalry among competing firms. • Week Six: Analyze your country with respect to export and imports. Does it export? What are its approaches to exporting (direct, indirect, passively filling orders or selling to domestic buyers)? Does it import? What are its motivations for importing (specialization or labor, global rivalry, local availability, diversification, or top management’s outlook)?
What are the import and export statistics for that country and investment. The written portion is due at the end of week 7. The written report must include all of the criteria mentioned above. It has to be at least 8-10 pages in length and must contain a minimum of ten resources. It must be written in a proper APA format, using a Business Plan Template provided by by the Small Business Administration (SBA) or provided by the instructor in the Student Aids Section of this course. A grading rubric for this presentation is found on Blackboard. ——–
Below are the journal entries that i have submitted already about Dick\’s Sporting Goods and Mexico——- JOURNAL 1 THAT I WROTE- The country that I chose to use is Mexico, and the company that I chose is Dick\’s Sporting Goods. After doing some research, I have found that Dick\’s is only in the United States, and Mexico is heavily involved in all kinds of sports.
This would be a great addition to Mexico and it would give Dick\’s Sporting Goods a chance to expand internationally, starting somewhat close to home. I chose Mexico because I have done research on it in the past, and I believe it would be the best choice for the company I chose. I selected Dick\’s because it has everything you need when it comes to any type of sports and I love that store! I will be mainly using the internet and articles to do my research.
JOURNAL 2 THAT I WROTE- Mexico is a Federal Republic; its official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos which operates under a centralized government. The governmental powers are divided between executive, legislative, and judicial branches. By popular vote a president is elected for a 6 year term and acts as a chief of state and head of government. Cabinet members are picked based on the president’s decision.
A bicameral National Congress legislative branch consists of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. There are five hundred members of Chamber of Deputies, which are elected for three-year terms; there are 128 members in the Senate, elected for six-year terms. In the judicial branch the Supreme Court of Justice is the highest tribunal. The dominant Religion in Mexico is Roman Catholicism.
The Catholic beliefs and practices were accepted my Mexico’s indigenous people after the conquest by the Spanish people. Since the Catholic Church has been a very powerful institution in Mexican history, the relationship the church as had with the state has been tense at time and sometimes openly hostile. Protestant missionaries have been particularly active in southern Mexico and among the urban poor.
Even though in the eyes of the law men and woman are equal, there is still a clear indication that the men are the chief of the family. Women are seen as the caretakers while the men are in charge. There is a widespread of unequal distribution of wealth in Mexico. At one point in 1998 an estimated 27 percent of Mexico was living below the poverty line. After doing some reasearch, I don\’t see Mexico as being very equpit for international business, I feel they need to keep growing and building,http://www.everyculture.com/Ma-Ni/Mexico.html
