How important is First Line Supervisory Training?
According to the article, “The First Line Supervisor: Where the Rubber Meets the Road,” developing into a first line supervisor is a process (Sturgeon, 2010). Individuals must develop efficient communication and writing skills, they must learn how to discipline staff members, they must be knowledgeable in policies and procedures, and they must reinforce the mission and goals of the agency.
First Line Supervisory Training provides individuals with practical skills to assist them in developing and accomplishing individual, organizational, and community goals. The imperativeness of this type of training to to help prepare first line supervisors for management or leadership. The first line supervisor is one of the first jobs of supervisory that often leads to management positions in the future. The better skillful they are as first line supervisors, the better managers they will become (Sturgeon, 2010).
Do you agree with the manner in which Sergeant Rick handled this situation?
In the dilemma concerning Sergeant Rick, his actions were justifiable. According to the article, “The First Line Supervisor: Where the Rubber Meets the Road,” one effect of first line supervisors not doing their jobs is poor morale (Sturgeon, 2010). Due to the fact that Officer Johnson had a reputation of always taking off days, this shows that the previous first line supervisor lacked morale causing mismanagement. The reason why Sergeant Rick’s actions might have seemed unjustly was because the Sampson Correctional Institution wasn’t use to change, which was a first line supervisor who fulfilled his duties.
Sergeant Rick ensured that the department’s policies were followed by his subordinates, and that the department’s procedures were adhered to by members working in his field (Sturgeon, 2010). Although Officer Johnson was his friend, he still disciplined him. If Sergeant Rick would have allowed Officer Johnson to take a day off outside the regular order of days off, he would have continued to request days off, which he had a reputation for doing. The previous first line supervisor could have been the reason why he had this reputation.
It is the first line supervisor who is first to be able to notice the morale of the staff members, find a policy or procedure that is not working as written, better poor staffing patterns, etc (Sturgeon, 2010). Sergeant Rick ensured that this was done. Also, another reason why Sergeant Rick’s actions could have been deemed unjustly is because of the detrimental relationship Sergeant Rick had with Lieutenant Murray that caused him to discard the disciplinary action against his friend, Officer Johnson.
How would you have handled this situation?
First line supervisors are the gap between the line staff and management. They should be able to communicate with both of these groups whenever needed to (Sturgeon, 2010). However, this was not the case for Sergeant Rick because Lieutenant Murray did not hear him out. After being denied to take out a disciplinary action on Officer Johnson, I would have gone to the captain of the department. Knowing that the captain is over the lieutenant, he could have decided in favor of my position in the allegation against the officer.
