In an essay of 1,000-1,500 words, analyze how one or two of the readings we have studied illuminate a major difference between your home and the Hult Boston community or, more generally, Cambridge and Boston. (Limitless learning students can focus on a difference between their home and the online classroom experience at Hult, if that is more accessible.)
For example, you might comment on how the principles described by Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, the Qur’an, Mary Wollstonecraft, Adam Smith, W.E.B. DuBois, or any of the other writers on our syllabus help to explain:
A difference between some aspect of the Hult community and your previous school; or
Education in our class compared to your high school classes; or
Cambridge compared to your previous residence; or
Some aspect of local society and classes that you find different from your previous experiences.
Here are some even more specific examples:
Choose a major difference between your home and Hult (for example, exposure to different cultures, academic rigor, the Cambridge community, or gender relations), and explain how one of the readings helps to illuminate this difference.
Apply some aspect of Plato’s understanding of truth as discussed in his analogy of the cave to Hult’s educational system, compared to your high school.
Apply Aristotle’s theory about the importance of rules to some element of U.S. society, compared to your home.
Apply Confucius’s argument about the importance of introspection to some element of the culture of the Hult community, compared to your home.
Compare some economic element of your home and the Hult community, and explain how the writings of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Yuval Harari, or some other thinker we have read help to explain this difference.
Be sure to state your thesis in the first paragraph (for example, “[Reading X] helps to explain [difference Y] between Hult and my previous school for [reason Z] in the following ways [1, 2, and 3]”), provide examples to support and illustrate your thesis, and include references correctly formatted with APA citations (Links to an external site.) to the source material you cite from our readings. Feel free to illustrate your essay with pictures, videos, or other materials if you like.
You can revise and resubmit your essay after you receive your initial grade and comments any time before the assignment closes on the final day of the term for a potentially higher grade.
The estimated time to complete this assignment is approximately 10 hours.
