KFC Corporation is world’s most famous chicken restaurant that was found by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952. As one of the biggest food company in the world, KFC is attempting to give benefits towards the society(About Us – KFC 2011).
In order to survive in the long term, KFC has a vision be the leader of fast food restaurant with the intention to produce good quality of food and services to all of the customers. While KFC’s mission is to maximise its profit, giving more value to all stakeholders, and being a friendly fast-food restaurant for the customers.
KFC has its core value, which are hospitality and food quality that KFS has put effort on in order to achieve growth in the future (KFC’s Vision and Mission 2011)
Zimbabwe has been selected as the local network for KFC since it is considered as less developed country where there is a high level of poverty, lack of access to education, and there is a low quality of healthcare. In addition, there has been an issue where there is an inequality between gender and discrimination still occurs (Boutayeb and Helmert 2011, 2).

Therefore, in order to protect the rights of people living in Zimbabwe,KFC has adopted The United Nations Global Compact, which is a strategy that ensures businesses work according to the society’s acceptable manner. There are ten principles in Global Compact and KFC has adopted two of the principles such as:

  1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
  2. Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

With these principles, KFC will be able to cooperate with the local network in China in order to achieve a better future for society.
Here are some of the recommendations by KFC in order to protect the human rights of African people in the case of the improvement of children’s health and education, maternal health and workplace safety.
 Raising more funds in order to ensure that all poor children in Africa receive the same level of education.
There has been an issue that 76 percent of the total children inZimbabwe are not able to have an access to primary education due to the lack of access to education and high rate of poverty that cause the parents to be unable to send their children to school to receive education. According to the goal 2 of Millennium Development goals stated that by 2015, all children including boys and girls will be able to complete the full course of primary education. With the objective that has been set by United Nations, KFC is able to contribute for its help to raise more funds from the company’s profit to help to provide free education for the children with the objective to produce a better generation with high knowledge to help the country to improve its economic growth. In addition, through this universal education, the problem of gender inequality can besolved because both gender have the ability to have an access to education.

  1. Reduce the level of poverty and hunger by providing jobs for the poorer people.

There has been an economic crisis inZimbabwe and cause the people to lose their jobs. As a result, there is an increase in the number of unemployment and cause the level of poverty to increase. KFC can collaborate with the government to provide jobs for the local people so that the people will earn income and purchase necessity goods and services to satisfy the needs of the family. As a result there will be an improvement in the standard of living of people in Africa. In addition, when the people have more financial power, they are able to contribute to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Africa.
 Educating marriage couple on how to improve the maternal health.
It has been reported that there are high number of deaths and childbirth injury. This is due to the lack of education on health, nutrition and homebirths. KFC can help to achieve the fifth goal of Millennium Development goals by cooperating with UNFPA and UNICEF to have a campaign, educating women on the proper nutrition during pregnancy to prevent childbirth injury, such as fistula a-rupture. By cooperating with UNICEF, it can help to improve the level of children health in order to improve the health of future generation.

  1. Monitoring and regulating the safety of the workplace.

KFC will not be able to grow as a large food company if it ignores the workplace safety for its labour. It can be done by gathering the staffs of the company to have a weekly machine checking and workplace cleaning. The objective of these activities is ensuring that the machines used comply with the safety standard. The cleaning of the workplace has the objective to prevent any unwanted accident. For example: cleaning the floor from the frying oil spill so that the staff will not slip. If the workplace is secured, the safety needs of the workers are satisfied.

Benefits for key stakeholders
If the recommendations are accepted, the key stakeholders, such as the United Nations is benefited because the plan has helped the United Nations in achieving their Millennium Development goals, which are focusing on improving the level of education and health by 2015. Society and employees are benefited since their rights are being guaranteed. There will be a better future generation since there is more access to education and better healthcare provided by the business approach. Government is also able to improve the economy of the country since the level of poverty has been reduced through jobs creation aimed for the local people in order to improve their standards of living.
However, aside from those benefits given, there will be several problems encountered during the process of achieving those goals. The risks from those activities are some organisations may be unwilling to participate in developing and achieving the goals. The high rate of poverty may cause difficulty in raising funds to help them since the number of population is also high. Furthermore, some of the employees may refuse to cooperate because they are not motivated to produce a conducive workplace.
In conclusion, based on the two principles of Global Compact on human rights, KFC will able to cooperate with the local network and help to improve the standard of living of the local people in Zimbabwe as stated by the vision and mission of KFC that the aim of its operation is to maximise the benefits for all stakeholders. Through the recommendations that have been given, KFC is able to contribute its help to achieve Millennium Development Goals, such as to solve the issue on poverty and gender inequality in order to improve the living condition in Zimbabwe.
