Instruction:

Choose a topic: (you may opt to use the topic for your final project for this assignment)

    • Select an aspect of healthcare finance, payment reform, or policy relevant to your clinical practice. This should be a topic that piques your curiosity or represents and area where you would like to build expertise.
    • If you are unsure of a topic, I suggest reviewing recent issues of journals such as Health Affairs or consider below suggested topics (not all-inclusive.)
  1. Define your audience:
    • Think about to whom you are speaking? For example, if you were discussing the Affordable Care Act, your intended audience might be a hospital’s Board of Trustees who influence funding decisions.
  2. Introduction to Topic:
    • Provide a compelling opening that highlights why this topic is relevant and timely in the current healthcare landscape.
    • Explain how the topic fits into innovation, regulatory frameworks, or the payment environment.
    • For example, if you choose to explore the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on healthcare costs, you might consider introducing the presentation by discussing how AI has potential to either reduce costs or create new challenges in clinical and administrative settings.
  3. Description of Topic:
    • Delve into the specifics of your chosen topic. Provide background information, current developments, and any key statistics or findings that illustrate the importance of this issue in healthcare.
    • Consider including challenges, recent changes, and implications for healthcare costs, patient care, or accessibility.
    • For example, if discussing healthcare supply chains, you may describe how disruptions (such as shortages of person protective equipment during COVID-19) have led to policy changes, and outline steps providers can take to ensure resource availability.
  4. Suggests for Improvement/Application:
    • Offer actionable insights or solutions related to your topic. Think about how this information can be used to make practical changes in a clinical setting or influence broader healthcare policies.
    • For example, if focusing on the opioid crisis, you may suggest specific policy adjustments for opioid prescribing practices that could reduce healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes.
  5. Presentation Format:
    • Prepare a TED-Talk style presentation. Your talk should be engaging and informative and last approximately 8-10 minutes. Think about the TED-Talks you find most interesting—do they use appropriate humor, visual aids, or other innovative techniques to hold your attention? In other words, make this your own!
  6. Post in Discussion Forum:
    • Upload your presentation into the discussion forum to share with your classmates. Be ready to discuss your topic further and answer any questions form your peers.

Helpful Videos/Tips: These are not all-inclusive but some helpful hints to get you started.

Here is a rubric for grading this assignment.

Submission:

Students must post their original response (Ted-talk presentation) to the Discussion Forum by Day 4, and have until Day 7 to respond to your two of your classmates. The response should be in a meaningful interactive way to promote an engaging discussion. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth and breadth of your responses.
