Three parts: 1. Reconstruction: The word reconstruction means to construct to build and, in this case, to rebuild the entire nation from ruin. After the Civil War, there was the need to rebuild. For example on Health = pollution by masses of dead bodies, need to bury them, clear the rivers of the bodies, disease prevailed. The red Cross was established. AGRICULTURE = need for food, harvest. TRANSPORTATION = rebuild the State Capitols, government offices, telegraph, reconstruct records, land deeds, names of residents. Send people to represent the groups in Congress, Senate. To review the Constitution of the US, see the flaws, and amend it Write about the 13, 14, 15th amendments. EDUCATION at all levels, no formal schooling in the war years, need to teach about deeds as well as basic reading and writing. Colleges were established at the this time, the money came from government, and wealthy philanthropists you can name. This is the Congress that tired to give reparations to former slaves, did it work? PERSONALTIES: Booker T. Washington(Please write and mention him), George Washington Carver both to Tuskegee institute, its philosophy, see up From Slavery and the Atlanta Speech (given out in class). Great Campbell the Black man who wanted a state in the USA to build a black community. W.E.B.Dubois, Harvard graduate, and his philosophy, “The Talented Tenth,” “Double Consciousness.” “Pan Africanism.” The Niagara Movement forerunner of the NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
2. The Demise & Fall of Reconstruction
: History of White Power organizations, organized terrorist group Ku Klux Klan (see list of others given out in class). The mainstream press printed lies about blacks to get them out of office, defame them, other jobs were lost. The bombing of towns, city of Tulsa Oklahoma where there were Black billionaires and thriving entrepreneurs. Massive lyncing all lead to homeless Blacks as refugees in their own country without help. They began to form their own collectives. The Kansas Exodus, see textbook. The Great Migration, rural to urban. Mental attacks on the mind and character through mass media, films like “Birth of a Nation,” commercial products, bad science and books. Negative Stereotypes in an era before Ebony Magazine, Black Enterprise had positive images. (The Crisis, a Black publication was positive with the Black Press. The life and history of B. Wells, an on site journalist activist. Aims of antagonist was to reinstall the old slave “Black Codes.”)
3. Personal Thoughts
: Have you been stereotyped or know of people or friends who have been? How can education change this? What should we do about terrorists, we certainly cannot let world bullies grow and have their way. What about gun control of war weapons used in the shootings in schools, shopping mails, theaters, churches today, yet owning and hunting with guns is wanted and legal? What about the Confederate flag that until recently was flying over State Capitols. We have many Blacks in high government positions now, remembering a period (other that reconstruction) when we had none, what difference has it made? Is there something you can say about your own thoughts international, national, local. family, hearsay, friend, enemy that you can add? You can always end with wise sayings or the document called the Declaration of Independence.
