Checklist for Graduation Proposal and Project

Appendix 1: Checklist of Graduation Proposal

Correct use of source reference in APA style
Correct use of the English language
The proposal has a maximum of 5x A4, including this checklist.
General information
The general information contains all elements as mentioned in the Manual Graduation Project.
Introduction client/case
The introduction contains a short description of the client (company) or case.
Problem analysis/reason: advice or design request
The problem analysis/reason describes the reason and current situation of the problem / subject / challenge.
The difference between the current and desired situation is briefly described.
It is clearly described which type of professional product provides an answer to the main question (advice / design / end product).
Internal sources have been used and correctly represented in the text (APA style).
Objective, main and sub-questions
The objective connects to the main question and contains the same elements.
The main question doesn’t contain a double question and contains the most important variables that have emerged from the problem analysis.
For an advice question: the main question is derived from: client, strategy and objective, possibly supplemented with a certain context. The sub-questions are derived from: theory, internal – and external context.   For a design question: the main question is derived from: client, type of design for which product/service, target group and the context. The sub-questions are divided in two phases: preliminary research phase and prototype phase. In the preliminary research phase the sub-questions are derived from: theory, needs and context. In the prototype phase the sub-questions are derived from relevance and consistency of prototype product/service X and from the expected usefulness and effectiveness of product/service X.
Sub-questions are no definition questions (f.e. What is positioning? )
Theoretical substantiation
Maximum three theories or theoretical models are described briefly  and there is a substantiation of the choices made (not only the standard models/theory).
Only scientific sources are used for the theory / theoretical models.
For an advice question: all choices for the approach of the primary research are covered in the proposal and are justified: strategy, methods, population, sample, survey distribution (if applicable)   For a design question:  the proposal contains an extensive methodology in which the approach to  the preliminary research is described and justified. The preliminary research contains: theoretical framework, needs and context analysis. The stakeholder groups and what you want to know about them, is clearly described (determine variables) and how you will collect information (through which methods)
Constraints / obstacles and planning
The proposal contains three constraints and/or obstacles with a suitable solution and a planning.
Source reference list
There is one integrated source list with all (e-)books, articles, websites and webpages in APA-style.
A minimum of 13 literature sources are listed of which four international (scientifically) sources (professional literature, (e-)books, articles etc.), one methodological and minimal a reference to the website of the client (of problem owner in case of an independent graduation project)

Appendix 2: Checklist Graduation Project

This checklist is an aid for assessing whether your graduation project meets the requirements. This does not concern assessing the level of the content.

research project

Method of approach:

  • Complete the checklist before you present the report your graduation project to the fist assessor. Tick the appropriate box if your graduation project meets that criterion.
  • If you discover shortcomings on the basis of the checklist, correct these first and then complete the list again.
  • When you present the report of your graduation project for assessment, you must attach a copy of the completed checklist to it.
  • You can find the checklist at the next page.

A clear professional product has been delivered (advice / design / end product)
Correct use of source reference in APA style
Correct use of the English language. The report has been read by a third party (this does not mean the graduation coach, but for example your parents or a friend). The report has been checked for punctuation. Behind every sentence there is a point, that also applies to footnotes and source list. Also note spaces.
Numbers to 10 in the text are not written as numbers (1, 2, 3) but as a word (one, two, three).
The report is between 15.000 to 20.000 words (40 to maximum 60 pages excluding   foreword, source list and appendices) and contains all chapters as mentioned in the Manual Graduation   Project.
The report has a professional and consistent implemented lay-out.
Management summary
The management summary is maximum 2x A4.
The management summary summarizes the research questions, methods and findings well-arranged (also for non-specialists).
Introduction: introduction client /case, problem analysis/reason, objective, main and sub-questions
Several internal and / or external sources were consulted for the problem analysis.
Objective, main and sub-questions have been taken from the approved graduation proposal. If these have been changed in the meantime, this approval has been approved by the graduation coach and examiner.
Context analysis and theoretical framework (and for design: need analysis)
The internal context of the subject within the organization of the client /case has been analysed, as well as the external developments in the industry and the trends and developments that influence the subject.
The theoretical framework provides an overview of current theoretical knowledge about the research topic.
The theoretical framework includes a summary of relevant visions / theories and /or models and your opinion about this (substantiation).
In the theoretical framework sufficient use has been made of scientific (professional) literature (no dictionary, encyclopaedia or Wikipedia and no model websites).
Extra for design / end product: in addition to a brief context analysis and theoretical framework, the preliminary research also contains a needs analysis.
Extra for design /end product: secondary and primary research were used in the preliminarily research. The approach to all methods used is extensively justified (see further methodology).
Methodology and methodological substantiation
For advice: in a separate chapter Methodology all elements are covered as mentioned in the Manual Graduation Project.   For design /end product: all elements of the methodology are covered and substantiated in the preliminary research, the design and prototype phase. There is no separate chapter Methodology.
The research questions, context en theory have been operationalized in the measuring instruments used (for example, questions in surveys or interviews).
There is a clear description of the approach to quantitative and qualitative research methods.
For a sample: there is a clear specification of the population and description of the method of sampling including sample calculation (if applicable)
It is described how the quality of the research is guaranteed: reliability, validity and ethics.
If the final response is lower than the required sample size, it is calculated what that means for reliability.
For advice: the results from the context analysis and the primary research give substance to the theory and models from the theoretical framework (application theory).
For design /end product: as a result of the preliminary research phase, design specifications have been formulated consisting of:  Functional requirementsUser requirements (such as user-friendliness)Constraints (as budget, time, laws, ethics)
For design / end product: there is a clear description of how the design (the creative leap) comes from the design specifications.
For design / end product: the justification for the prototype consists of a walkthrough / test with the client / stakeholders with regard to relevance, consistency, expected usability and effectiveness of the design.
For advice: an answer is given to the request for advice. Concrete advice is prepared.   For design/end product: the main question is answered through the presentation of the final design / end product.
Discussion and reflection
The discussion is a critical reflection on all steps of the graduation project.
The reflection is a critical reflection on the learning process, the learning gain and any conclusions regarding further study and / or career.
Source reference list in APA-style
There is one integrated source reference list with all (e-)books, articles, websites and webpages in APA-style.
Relation main text – appendices
The report can be read, understood and assessed without the reader having to look at the appendices.
